Best Hotels in Tuscany, Italy Part 2: Villa di Piazzano

As we left our first Tuscan villa in Montalcino, which we really loved, we headed out towards the eastern side of Tuscany. The hills still endlessly rolled. Vineyards still covered the ground. We honestly weren't too sure whether or not we'd have a completely different experience than we'd had at our previous Tuscany location. But, as we drove down the long, tree-lined driveway of Villa di Piazzano, we knew we were in for something different. We also knew that we were in for something truly Italian.

Villa di Piazzano is a 500-year-old Tuscan villa that's been converted into a luxury hotel. It's located in the town of Cortona, which is right at the border of Tuscany and Umbria. As soon as you step out of your car and look at the property, you know you're in for a treat.

The building is comprised of both rustic stone and yellow stucco. Large trees cover the property, vines wrap around the building's facade, and vintage pillars rise above the patio. Oh, and there's also a pool in the backyard, where the staff will serve you drinks all day while you look out at the large hill behind the property.

Inside the hotel, the same authentic, Italian charm runs through the walls. The floor in the lobby is comprised of timeless black and white checkered tiles. The spiral stairs that lead up to the suites creak as you ascend. All of the rooms have also been updated and feel very clean, but they still maintain a traditional villa look. The rooms also face out into the property's gardens, so you always wake up to a nice green view.

Villa di Piazzano also offers an on-site restaurant that serves high-end takes on classic Italian cuisine. The food was delicious, however it is a bit more expensive than the food you'd find in the local towns. Having breakfast, lunch, and / or dinner on their backyard patio overlooking the pool and hillside, though, is well worth it. There's also a gym, and an on-site bar you can go to for a post-workout, poolside beverage. One of our favourite things to do, however, was grab a bottle of wine after dinner, sit on their side patio, which faces the hillside town Cortona, and watch the sun set.

So, if you're heading to the east side of Tuscany and are looking for a place to stay, check out Villa di Piazzano. It's one of the best hotels in Tuscany, Italy, and it's incredible, tree-lined property, 500-year-old villa, hillside pool and on-site restaurant provide an authentic Tuscan experience, while simultaneously helping you have a relaxing holiday.
